REFLECTIONS in PISCES A painting by Jim Thompson Gouache and watercolor on artboard 18x24 The constellation Pisces may harbor strangely calm worlds such as this. Here the viewer is standing on the stony shore of an extremely placid ocean. The unusually clear liquid reflects nearly every detail of the seascape and sky. The warm amber and yellow tones suggest evening glow from the large, elongated, oval sun looming low in the center. This sun is being stressed at its equator as the result of enormous outward pressures caused by its rapid rotational cycle. The faint gaseous planet in the upper right is part of the local solar system. The orangy-brown clouds stretch out in various directions, indicating a more rapid movement of upper atmospheric winds and weather patterns. The slanted and ridged rocky forms just offshore are indicative of much more severe weather and turbulence in the distant past of this now tranquil world. These huge and strange shapes extend below the liquid surface and can be faintly seen through the amazingly clear ocean, even out to a great distance. What this liquid may consist of and how it is so clear is a matter for the imagination to ponder. The viewers may travel there to explore in their own imaginative way, interpreting what they discover in their own terms. Art, Mind and SoulArtist and creator
