MIDNIGHT in URSA MAJOR A painting by Jim Thompson Gouache and watercolor on artboard Digital 15.5x36 The ancient remains of a super hard, beautifully stratified, and marble-like substance that dominates this world, stand like sentinels at some enchanted gate to a glowing blue horizon beyond. The similarity in these shapes, as they face each other gives the impression of strange and gaunt beings. The lavender sands at their bases are the remnants of eons of high pressure weathering, much like patches and deserts of sand created by wind erosion on earth. The sky reveals a spectacular egg-like nebula which has burst open, seemingly to hatch a cluster of new stars from within its bright and gaseous interior. Some stars are partially veiled into a diffused glow, as they are mingled with the out-rushing clouds of debris and gases. Long shadows that correspond to the glowing star cluster light are seen advancing toward the viewer in perspective across the gentle rolling sands. The timeless specter of these very old shapes and this seemingly tranquil environment, projects a kind of soulful stillness that speaks of almost eternal endurance, haunting of personality and character.
