FREE FORM A painting by Jim Thompson Gouache and watercolor on textured paper 12.6x16 The birth of totally uncontrolled forms that arose out of simply scribbling on a piece of paper, resulted from closing the eyes and letting the drawing hand go almost detached from the mind. Once the scribbles were done, an eraser was used to separate some lines and a pencil was used to close others. Soon a shape resembling a real object began to appear. This now organized, rough sketch became the template for an airbrush mask. After carefully building up tone, shadow and highlight in blue hues, this was now a realistic three dimensional-looking structure. Giving it a foundation and a ground shadow added to its real-world illusion of actually being something that has volume and depth. Thus the name "Free Form." No design. No plan. No intent. Just structured substance from pure chaos. A tantalizing reminder of how complex and intricate forms of life and substance that have composed us and all we see, was once merely molten and chaotic matter hurling through space and time. Very simple. Very profound. Art, Mind and SoulArtist and creator
